7. Utilize history as a heritage and asset

  1. 7. Utilize history as a heritage and asset

Shuri Castle has been burned to the ground many times but it has repeatedly been restored as a symbol of peace and prosperity. It is very important not just to inform about the history and culture of Shuri Castle, but also to pass down the long process of this project to the next generation, and educate about the value of the project.
Consequently, the following project utilizes the tourism resources of the Shuri Castle neighboring area to inform about its value as well as to provide a chance for children to visit and learn.

(1)Utilizing various and attractive tourism resources

For visitors from outside of Okinawa, places such as the stone-paved road, stone walls of houses, and sacred sites and wells, which all portray the unique lives of the area, are very attractive historical and cultural assets. These locations that include local traditional industry must be recognized as hidden tourist attraction gems of the region and should be utilized.
To do so, with the help of the national government, the prefectural government will suggest a route to experience the charm of Shuri, create programs for learning and experiencing the history, culture and lives of the region, as well as preserve and support local cultural assets and regional events that will contribute to tourism.

(2)Promoting Okinawa’s efforts to send a peace-seeking message to the world

It is Okinawa Prefecture’s responsibility to inform about the terrible history of the Battle of Okinawa to future generations, and promote the peace-seeking message of Okinawans.
In order to do so, we will preserve and protect the ruins of war in the Shuri area including the 32nd Military Headquarters Trench Remains, provide witness records and war documents, as well as develop learning tools using AR (augmented reality) and ICT. In this way, the prefectural government intends to improve the environment regarding passing on historical value and promoting peace.

*AR (augmented reality)
The situation where objects appear in the real world using computer technology
**ICT (Information and Communications Technology)
An umbrella term that covers technologies using computer and data conveyance

(3)Passing down to children who will live into the future

Through this Shuri Castle restoration project, witnessing many people’s united efforts and passion and learning about local history and culture will lead our children to grow up with Okinawan characteristics: chimugukuru (generous hearts), ichariba chode (valuing friendship even with people you’ve just met), and yuimaru (circle of people or willingness to help each other). This will also contribute to preserving and protecting cultural assets, and reviving the local region.
Therefore, the prefectural government will work together with Naha City and other related organizations, and we will provide places for children to view, learn, and experience Ryukyu culture, as well as support projects that will help realize these goals.
