The area centered around Shuri Castle (the Historical Shuri Project area) is a buffer zone to protect and preserve the World Heritage site, that is the ruins of Shuri Castle.
Upon pursuing this restoration project, the “New Historical Shuri Project,” which demonstrates the direction of castle town urban planning, was reevaluated to fit the needs of a changing society. The following have been decided in order to create, with the help of local residents and related organizations, a historical Shuri area for learning and experiencing Ryukyu culture.

(1)Creating a distinctive urban space to capture history

In order to promote the charms of areas around World Heritage sites including the ruins of Shuri Castle, Sonohyan-utaki Stone Gate, and Tamaudun Royal Mausoleum, the prefectural government is aiming to create and promote a distinctive urban space (historical landscape) where you can experience the history of the area around Shuri Castle, including Shurijo Castle Park. We have been bringing back buildings with red-roof tiles, stone-paved roads, and stone walls, which show the traces of the royal capital. While preserving and recreating these charms unique to old Shuri, we aim to create historical landscapes that work timelessly.

(2)Developing Shurijo Castle Park and neighboring areas in stages

As for developing Shurijo Castle Park and neighboring areas, it is important to create a town and park with depth from all directions, restore existing cultural assets in the area, and develop historical elements of the town in stages.
In order to do so, we will pursue the project to restore Nakagusuku Udun (palace) and Enkakuji temple located inside the prefectural park facility. In addition, we will work together with the Japanese government and Naha City to examine ways to restore in stages other cultural assets found in the site of Uchaya Udun, develop a center for local excursions and cultural experiences, and create networks (with small paths) through public-private collaboration.

(3)Improving the traffic environment

In the Shuri area, which has many visitors, heavy traffic caused by rental cars, tour buses, and taxis is a big issue.
In order to solve traffic issues and create a historical town in the Shuri Castle and neighboring areas, we aim to provide tangible and intangible support to bring out the charms of the town by creating smooth and robust foot traffic, improving public transportation that visitors and local residents can share, securing parking spaces, and providing information via ICT (Information and Communications Technology).
